Lawyers' cloud, effective solution to Not Petya ransomware

Barely a month after the WannaCry ransomware attack, a new computer attack took place last week. Not Petya fell into the same Microsoft Windows loophole as its predecessor. Here again, the lawyers' cloud is a solution that protects the firm from this type of problem.

Not Petya ransomware

The computer attack in question originated in Russia and infected mainly Ukrainian machines (60% of the contaminated machines are located there) and European and American companies and institutions. Here you can see the head office of DLA Piper go back to the good old flipchart to communicate with your employees!

As evidenced by this message, the IT teams of the large American firm had to stop virtually all their IT services in order to protect the firm.

According to the site Legaltechnews, DLA Piper activities are still significantly slowed down at the time of writing.

In reality, it is not strictly speaking a ransomware, but rather a wiper. Therefore, would this be the work of a state actor whose sole aim is to destroy data and not to monetize it?

If we are to believe next article, it is still far too early to draw definitive conclusions about the attackers' objective.

On the other hand, we can already learn lessons for the future.

Secure your data in the lawyer cloud

Cloud technology is independent of your operating system. Windows (or more rarely MacOS) vulnerabilities are therefore not threats to your data. Additionally, there is no possible propagation between your local operation and operation in the cloud. Also, even if your local files were affected, their replication in the cloud would not be.

Local or simply hosted solutions are fragile. They are entirely based on operating system administration, therefore on the same fragilities. In addition, security equipment and protocols are not impenetrable only in the case of the cloud.

Regardless of the functional advantages of this or that practice management software, the notions of mobility and therefore security are essential and must be integrated into the software reviews and comparisons that firms perform.

The time when security only concerned large entities is over! Yet according to a study (in English), 40% of American firms are still unaware of their vulnerability. What would the figures be for France? Worrying, for sure...
