6 steps to successfully opening your law firm!

All lawyers are trained to practice their activity as a freelancer. Whether independent or in association, opening your practice is, however, a demanding choice. Moreover, a large number of graduates work as collaborators, by choice or preference.

Setting up your own business remains a decisive step in a lawyer's career, but its difficulty is underestimated. After having spoken with hundreds of firms, of all sizes, all practices and all regions, we can tell you that it is important to put yourself in the right frame of mind. In a few words : Think like an entrepreneur! This is the condition shared by all successful firms. For example, reread this enlightening testimony published in the Village de la Justice.

Here we offer you a breakdown of the 6 steps to successfully opening your law firm.

Hosted vs. installed lawyer software: the match!

The computerization of lawyers began in the 80s. The digitalization of the world has since gone through 4 successive phases that lawyers have followed valiantly. The choice of a lawyer software was carried out by approximately one in two firms. Lawyers began to equip themselves with software (office software in particular) from the 80s. Then the 2000s saw the arrival of a new generation of software, more complete but also more complex: law firm management software. Since 2010, it has been the turn of hosted software (or cloud) dedicated to lawyers to develop strongly. A short historical and comparative review of these different trends.

Law firm and clients, lots of misunderstandings! #Lexpo17

La customer relationship of the law firm is undergoing a transformation.

, CEO of Accritas, shared with the audience at #Lexpo17 the conclusions of a major marketing study conducted with 2.000+ members of legal departments and around 1000 recognized lawyers.

The conclusions are explicit:

  • the client has a degraded image of the law firm
  • the firm has the impression of having greatly improved its customer relations.

How to get out of this vicious circle? The classic customer survey method makes it possible to identify areas for improvement.

Ask the customer

The first step is of course to interview the customer. The most widespread criticism among the 20.000 customers surveyed over the last 10 years can be summed up in 2 words: “POOR VALUE”.

Indeed, from the customer's point of view, much can be done to improve this perception.

Legaltech innovation and technologies in the spotlight at the #Lexpo17 conference

We participated in the conference #Lexpo17 in Amsterdam on May 8 & 9, 2017. 300 European lawyers gathered around a strong program to address innovation strategies. The answers provided by law firms shed light on possible paths. Finally, Legaltech trends are perceptible and must be considered by lawyers.

The conferences, entirely in English, are led by industry references. Ron Friedman, Jordan Fulong and Rohit Talwar are keen connoisseurs of trends (and very good presenters).

Who are the best law firms 2017?

The Law Trophies ended Thursday evening with the presentation of prizes to all the winning law firms.

No less than 700 lawyers, jurists and partners were present at the awards dinner.

Formal but festive, the event first gave rise to an introductory speech by Ms. Elizabeth Menesguen of the National Bar Council.

A Trophy of Honor was then presented to Me Jacques Barthélémy by Frédéric Sicard and Marie-Aimée Peyron, President of the President and future President of the President of Paris.

Award ceremony for Best Customer Relations Firm

Martin Bussy, co-founder of Jarvis Legal, had the pleasure of presenting the prize for Best Customer Relations Firm to the SVZ firm (Sekri Valentin Zerrouk).

Despite very high quality competition, SVZ was chosen as the winner for its mySVZ innovation coupled with LegalCluster.

Thanks to this tool, the firm provides its legal department clients with a management space for its lawyers all over the world, with private access and shared supervision between the SVZ firm and the client. Thus, the customer can rely on selected skills, worldwide.

List of winning law firms

Many other categories were awarded prizes. Let us cite for example the Strelia firm, Best Belgian firm or Schellenberg Wittmer, Best Swiss firm, which we auditioned in Brussels and Geneva in February.

You will find here all the winners of the 2017 Gold Trophies.

For each category, many law firms were nominated. Everyone had to present a written dossier then support their project in front of a carefully selected jury. It was at the end of this demanding process that the jurors, in complete independence, voted individually.

This is of course a real disappointment for all the lawyers who did not win. We wish them much success for their future participations.

See you next year
